Cool Remote - Hefty Price

Monday, May 5th, 2008 | TV with No Comments »

Well, I must say that if anybody needs one remote in their house to do everything – it’s me. I have 7 remote controls and to grab each one of them to do just one task is really getting on my nerves. My 10 month old daughter is also having loads of fun grabbing each remote, playing with it then hiding it so I can’t find it. This makes it even worse of a situation for me when trying to watch TV.

Enter the Harmony 1000 from Logitech. This baby features a 3.5” touch screen (color) that lets you combine all of your remote control devices into one. Not only is the Harmony pretty to look out, it’s just darn-right cool to use. Setting up is a breeze utilizing the Smart State Technology and color touch-screen display. Nothing complicated here, so it’s pretty easy to use. One other cool thing I really liked about this remote was the fact that it transmits in either infrared mode or RF mode by use of an optional RF wireless extender, which lets you put everything behind a cabinet to keep the clutter down.

Now the one thing I definitely don’t like about this remote is the steep price. At around $400-$500 I don’t think I will be getting one any time soon. In fact, if you ask me Logitech should have included the RF device for the price they are asking.

Is TV Really Bad For Your Health?

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008 | TV with No Comments »

Yes, you read it correctly. TV is very addicting, especially with all those reality shows on you can’t help but watch some morons make complete fools out of themselves. So, it should come as no surprise that researchers devoted time to research what the effects on TV were to the body. Here’s what they found:

TV can make you fat – A French study has suggested that kids with TVs in their bedrooms are more likely to be overweight by eating more. There are also several additional studies showing that kids ate less calories per day when their TV time was cut into by other activities. Hey, this should pertain to adults as well, because when I’m watching the TV I want to snack on something – sort of like the popcorn at the movies thing.

TV can make you an idiot – This study was conducted in California and involved several schools. The researchers found that 70 percent of the students scored lower (significantly) on language, math and the reading tests. Researchers noted the lower scores are probably due to TV getting in the way of a student’s homework and sleep time.

TV turns you into a smoker – A study found that around 700 students aged 12 to 14 years of age found that kids watching TV were more prone to smoking (twice as likely). Also, 42 percent of kids that smoked cigarettes had a TV.

TV screws with your sleep – I’ll vouch for this one! I always fall asleep in front of the TV. This is for all you adults out there. Watching TV late at night will interfere with your sleep patterns and is bad for you as your body doesn’t get the required rest. People living in EST time zones are most affected by this.

So let’s all try to get a good night’s sleep tonight and TIVO all those late night shows! Until next time!

The (un)connected TV

Friday, January 11th, 2008 | TV with No Comments »

Sony_oled_tv_2 “The subtext of this show is that the internet has won.”

So declared Intel executive vice president Sean Maloney when I met him for breakfast at the ungodly hour of 7am in Las Vegas today.

To which the obvious response is: Well, up to a point.

As at other recent Consumer Electronics Shows, bringing internet services and content into the consumer electronics realm has been a big talking point at this years’ event. Sharp and Samsung showed off TVs that can draw content straight off the internet, no PC required. Microsoft added some more partners for its Xbox Live video marketplace.

Yet given how big the expectations -and the hype - have been, this seems very little to brag about (and anyway, doesn’t viewing weather forecasts from USA Today on your Samsung TV somehow feel very 1992?)

Robbie Bach, Microsoft’s top consumer honcho, was putting a diplomatic face on things when I met him later. He pointed out that the big TV networks are all trying out ways of distributing shows online, even if they can’t agree yet on a business model, and the movie studios are releasing more titles, even if they generally still feel safer for now with the familiar video-on-demand model rather than download-to-own.

Privately, other senior tech industry executives I’ve spoken to in the last couple of days have been far more sceptical than him. According to one, all the heat surrounding the Blu-ray / HD-DVD format war shows that Hollywood is looking the wrong way: it should instead be rushing to build an online distribution business as fast as it can, before it is overtaken by the same fate that has befallen the record labels.

It seems fitting that the biggest buzz at this year’s show has surrounded Pansonic’s 150-inch TV and Sony’s ultra-thin OLED screen (the same model that went on sale in Japan late last year, though in only very limited numbers.) Perhaps you’re too cheap to pay $2,500 for an 11 inch TV, but these are still the dream screens that the consumer electronics industry believes you should be aspiring to. Only, don’t ask whether they come with a USB port on the back.
