High speed Internet is the type of thing that’s become more of a necessity in the past few years. That’s because we’re expected to use the Internet to do everything from keeping in contact with those who we care about to managing our finances. Along with all of that, it’s also possible to enjoy a wide variety of different forms of entertainment through the Internet. All of this creates a really good argument for having a fast Internet connection in your home, but that’s more easily said than done. The obstacles to getting high speed Internet in your home are varied, but with the technology that’s available today you can probably get some kind of high speed Internet access from your home. The real obstacle is choosing which service to use to supply your high speed Internet connection.

Broad band digital cable high speed Internet access from Time Warner Cable is a good choice for a number of reasons, but in order to fully understand those reasons it’s a good idea to look at competing technologies. The most prominent technology that’s used by Time Warner Cable’s competitors is DSL which is short for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL transmits Internet data over the phone line that runs into your house. The fact that DSL is available over phone lines makes it fairly widely available, but it’s also pretty limited in a number of ways. DSL only delivers data are a rate of 3 mbps at the most for residential Internet connections. Plus, it doesn’t take very much to limit the download speed of a DSL connection. Distance from a connection node and the quality of the phone lines can be limiting factors to the extent that there are plenty of places where phone service is available and DSL isn’t available.

A less viable alternative to Time Warner Cable High Speed Internet service is satellite Internet. As its name implies, satellite Internet takes advantage of satellites that are in orbit around the Earth’s equator. The main value of satellite Internet is that it’s available just about everywhere. That one advantage comes with a lot of drawbacks though. A big drawback is the cost- both in terms of the equipment that you need to receive data from the satellites and send data onto the Internet through the satellites, as well as the monthly subscription fee. The other big drawback is the fact that the satellites are so far away that the signals take an appreciable amount of time to get to and from them. This results in a time lag that makes a satellite Internet connection just about useless for a variety of different applications that have to function in real time. This time lag can be devastating to online gaming as well as VoIP applications. On top of all of this, the slow download speed of 2 mbps (at the most) isn’t really the major reason to avoid this form of Internet access!

This brings us back around to broad band digital cable high speed Internet of the type used by Time Warner Cable. This form of Internet access doesn’t require any special equipment that isn’t provided free of charge by Time Warner Cable. It’s in the same general price range as DSL- which is about half the monthly cost of satellite Internet. It doesn’t have satellite Internet’s time lag problem. And at 8 mbps, it’s much faster than either of the competing technologies.

All of this makes the technology used by Time Warner Cable for high speed Internet access worth some serious consideration.
