Hands-on with the T-Mobile Shadow

Monday, October 29th, 2007 | Cell Phone with No Comments »

Well we’re sold. T-Mobile looks to be prepping the Shadow as a launch-off point for a whole line of consumer-friendly fancyphones that can finally give the Sidekick some competition in T-Mobile’s lineup, and this first Shadow certainly doesn’t miss its mark. The HTC hardware itself is pretty much spot on in every aspect, with a bright screen, solid slider action, thumb-friendly tactile keypad, smooth scroll wheel and a pocket-friendly form factor. We can’t say we’re crazy about this copper color, but it’s subtle enough, and it’s really a question of taste. Typing was a breeze on the SureType-esque keyboard, and while we wish the soft keys were a bit bigger, that’s about our only caveat. It is a bit of a chore to slide open the phone and close it without resting your thumb on the screen, so smudgephobia types might have some difficulty, but we’re basically resigned to that fate with any phone this glossy. Unfortunately, while T-Mobile has done its best at wrapping up Windows Mobile 6 with a glossy interface, it’s still Windows Mobile, and we found the whole interface a bit sluggish. The main screen is also a bit short on data, since T-Mobile has monopolized it with those fave five. WiFi was a snap to set up, but that doesn’t mean we’re entirely OK with EDGE data as 2007 is coming to a close, and the slow processor wasn’t helping our browsing experience either. If those few foibles can be overlooked, this could be your ticket out of smartphone monotony when it hits on October 31st for $149.99.

LG KU990 “Viewty” now available in Europe

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 | Cell Phone with No Comments »

You’ve waited oh-so-patiently for LG’s Viewty to land, and you’ve even tried to subdue your anxiety by combing over a glowing review, so feel free to cut loose now that the KU990 is finally available. Yep, starting today users can snatch up the mobile in “major European countries” for a still unannounced price, but we’re willing to bet you’ll pony up for all the joy that touchscreen, five-megapixel camera, DivX support, TV out and HSDPA will bring. Unfortunately, LG fails to mention any specific carriers in its release, but we’d assume Vodafone (and potentially Orange in the not-too-distant future) will be picking it up in their respective regions.

YouTube & MySpace Finally Mobilizing

Monday, October 1st, 2007 | Cell Phone with No Comments »

The biggest shock about these two pieces of news is the amount of time that it actually took (well, and continues to take, really) for two of the largest entertainments sites on the Web to launch mobile initiatives.

YouTube finally launched a mobile version of their site, back in June, which, after prompting users to upgrade their data plan to unlimited, finally offered the ability to watch videos from mobile devices (uploading to the site via mobile has actually been available for some time). The site launched to little fanfare on YouTube’s end–in fact, efforts to discover a press release on the subject proved fruitless.

After spending a bit of time on the site, it’s not really difficult to see why. On launching, the site took a fairly minimalist approach with regards to content. Recently, the spread has certainly improved, though it still can’t touch what’s offered on YouTube’s main site–though we’re probably a long way and a lot of unlimited data plans away from that kind of content offering on a mobile platform.

For their part, Myspace, one of the Web’s other major proprietors of streaming user-generated video content, has just announced their intentions to throw their News Corp-owned hat into the ring. The site intends to let users send messages, blog, find friends, comment on pictures, and update their mood via their handsets–in effect Twitterizing the process.

A more complete version, available to AT&T, Helio, and other unnamed service providers will get more access to Myspace features. Fox is also planning mobile versions of IGN, Rotten Tomatoes, and FoxSports.com. There was no mention of plans to offering a Mypace Video equivalent YouTube Mobile, however.

Looks like that limited YouTube spread is still the best bet.
