General
When you start TaskMan you can see 3 main views: Open applications, Memory and Quick start. You can switch between them with left/right cursor keys or by selecting the needed view from ‘View’ menu.
Open applications view
|
|
This view shows the information about running applications. You can see what applications are running currently, switch to the needed application, get information about any running application, close some application or all applications at once. You may also see the amount of memory available at the end of the list. This view substitutes the built-in task manager (if enabled in options) and task selecting navigation here is the same as in the built-in one. You can select an application by using joystick or just pressing Menu key several times to select the needed application and then long press Menu key to switch to the application. You can also select in Settings not to substitute the built-in task manager but to define your custom taskman activation hotkey, in this case both Best TaskMan and the system task manager will work without conflicts at the same time (See Settings section in this documentaion for more information). Hint: When this view is shown it automatically highlights the previously focused application so you can cycle between 2 last applications in a fast way. |
Advanced configuration
You can select “Tasklist exceptions”, and “‘Close all’ exceptions” from Settings menu in this this view:
- Tasklist exceptions - Allows to define a list of applications that should be hidden in Open applications view. It can be very comfortable to hide some applications running in background all the time and you switch to them very seldom. This option also applies to TaskSwitcher applications list (see TaskSwitcher section in this documentation for more information).
- ‘Close all’ exceptions - As ‘Close all’ command in Open applications view closes all non system applications you can set up here an additional list of applications that should not be closed with ‘Close all’ command.
Memory view
|
|
This view shows brief and detailed information about your device memory, phone disk and memory card |
Quick start view
|
|
This view allows you to increase the productivity usage of your smartphone. You can place here all most used applications and access them very fast when you need them. You can add an application to this list using “Add application(s)” command. Also you may use “Move up” and “Move down” commands (or shift+up/down keys) to arrange the applications. You can start an application directly from this view but there is also Quick start launcher - a unique and very fast way to start favourite applications. To use it you need to define a “Quick start hotkey” in system settings. Then the Quick start launcher window will appear after pressing the hotkey. From navigation and behavior point of view Quick start launcher is similar to TaskSwitcher (please see TaskSwitcher section below for more information) but there is favorites aplications list instead of running tasks list. |
Task Switcher
|
|
TaskMan’s Task Switcher is an alternative way to cycle applications (that requires much less key presses to switch between applications). TaskSwitcher has the same look and feel as “Alt-Tab on Windows”. You can configure your own TaskSwitcher hotkey in ‘Settings’. Default hotkey for it is “Shift+Menu”. For example you can set up Shift+Menu button for this action. Then press Shift+Menu any time you work with your device, keep Shift button pressed and hit Menu as many times as needed to select some application. Release Shift button to switch to the selected application instantly. Absolutely the same as Alt-Tab works on Windows. Hint: While you keep Shift pressed as in our example you can also use cursor keys to select the needed application and release Shift button to switch to the selected application. |
One hand mode:
You can define any hotkey to use with TaskSwitcher. A hotkey consisting of Modifier (Shift,Fn,Ctrl) and other button could not be handy in certain situations, e.g. to use with one hand. So you can define TaskSwitcher key without any modifiers, e.g. to Dictaphone, Multimedia, Camera, etc key. If so TaskSwitcher will behave like the built-in one but with improved functionality.
For example you can set up Dictaphone key to be used as TaskSwitcher. Then press Dictaphone key any time you work with your device and TaskSwitcher will appear. Hit Dictaphone key as many times as needed to select some application. Or use cursor keys to do it. Now long press Dictaphone key (for 1 sec) in order to switch to the selected application (Also you can press Ok or Enter buttons to do it as well). So you can hit Dictaphone button several times only (and no other key) to switch to any needed application fast and with one hand only.
Note: ‘Shift’ button on most Series 60 devices is graphically marked as ‘Pen’ on device keyboard.
Advanced views
You can access views that show advanced information about your device from “Views \ Advanced” menu. There are Processes, All open apps, and Installed apps views:
- Processes - Shows all active processes. Allows to get information about them and terminate any 3rd party processes. Ending any system processes are not allowed. System processes are the ones that supplied and configured by the device vendor (in firmware).
- All open apps - Shows the view similar to Open applications view but it also shows all hidden applications
- Installed apps - Shows all installed applications on your device. Allows you to get various information about these apps as well.
Settings
Using application settings you can override the default application behavior and customise it to fit your needs.
- “Taskman activation” - If it is set to “Instead of built-in one” then Best Taskman will replace the built-in task manager when you long press Menu key. If it’s set to ‘Custom key’ then both Best TaskMan and system taskman can work at the same time.
- “Activation hotkey” - Visible only when Taskman activation is set to ‘Custom key’. It allows you to define a hotkey to pop up Best TaskMan from background.
- “Switcher hotkey” - Allows you to define hotkey to use with TaskSwitcher.
- “Quick start hotkey” - Allows you to define hotkey to use with Quick start launcher
- “Autostart Taskman” - if enabled TaskMan will be automatically started in background when system starts

Music and entertainment are the big focuses here at Nokia’s Go Play event in London, and the two new N81 handsets address both of these with aplomb. Designed to complement Nokia’s new Ovi online portal that rolls a music store and the N-Gage gaming platform together, the Nokia N81 and N81 8GB include a bunch of multimedia functions in a sexy slider design.
Both models of the Nokia N81 include dedicated music buttons on the bottom and gaming keys on either side of the ear speaker. The N81 phones are designed to be used in a landscape orientation when used for gaming. The music and gaming keys also selectively light up when needed, ensuring that they don’t get in the way when they are not required. A 3.5mm headphone jack and Bluetooth v2.0 with the A2DP stereo headset profile mean you can use your favorite headphones to keep everything discrete, while a 3D multimedia menu provides a fun way to access your content. The devices are pre-configured for the Nokia Music Store and N-Gage, meaning you are ready to play straight out of the box.
The polished face of each Nokia N81 model hides a lot of non-music and game related smarts as well. The handsets run Nokia’s S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 smartphone operating system with a full complement of PIM services. The N81 phones are also compatible with high-speed 3G UMTS networks, and also provide 802.11b/g WLAN connectivity for when you are in range of an access point.
About the only place where the two N81 variants differ is in internal storage and expansion slots. The regular N81 has a built-in miroSD memory card expansion slot, while the N81 8GB has, not surprisingly, 8GB of internal storage but no expansion card slot.
Nokia expects the N81 and N81 8GB to ship during Q4 this year. The N81 is expected to go on sale for 360EUR (approximately US$490) while the N81 8GB should retail for EUR430 (approximately US$590).

T-Mobile has launched a partner programme dedicated to BlackBerry resellers, which the firm has claimed will give VARs preferential treatment on sales of the email device.
The BlackBerry from T-Mobile: Partner Programme is an extension of the firm’s Business Partner Programme, launched in May.
John Fannon, national sales manager at T-Mobile, said: “There are 17 benefits available for partners accepted onto the programme. These include: preferential pricing on BlackBerry products, which will mean partners receive cheaper units; marketing support from T-Mobile; and increased commission.”
However, Fannon said the mobile provider will be strict on entry to the scheme. To qualify for the benefits partners must sell 150 BlackBerry connections per quarter, with 80 per cent of those on two-year contracts.
T-Mobile has 17 partners in the UK and is hoping to include more than half in the BlackBerry
programme. Partners that have already joined include WN1 Communications, Olive Communications and BusinessMobiles.com.
Mark Geraghty, managing director of Olive Communications, said: “This is a very positive thing for our firm. We hope to put a better proposition to our customers and being part of the programme will help us do that.”

GSM digital mobile technology will tomorrow celebrate its 20th birthday.
On September 7 1987 an historic agreement was signed in Copenhagen by 15 telecommunications operators from 13 countries* that led to the development of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), and a mobile communications industry that today serves more than 2.5 billion people across 218 countries and territories.
The ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ agreement of 7th September 1987 laid the foundation for the first Europe-wide digital cellular system, which soon became the world’s first global mobile system as used by more than 700 mobile operators and served by thousands of suppliers today. The agreement also triggered a technology evolution path that continues today with the roll-out of more than 120 mobile broadband networks in 61 countries.
“The 1987 agreement is widely regarded as the foundation of today’s global mobile phone industry and the birth of one of the greatest technological achievements of our age,” said Rob Conway, CEO of the GSMA, the global trade association for mobile operators.
“The early vision of our industry created international cooperation on an unprecedented scale that has led to a socio-economic revolution benefiting people, businesses and countries throughout the world.”
“GSM is the single most important agreement in the history of telecommunications,” said Sir Christopher Gent, one of the original signatories of the agreement and former CEO of Vodafone and today Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline plc. “With 2.5 billion users around the world today, it has done more to bridge the digital divide than any other innovation, and is a tremendous example of global cooperation.”

According to FierceWireless, Google is currently sending out invitation emails to some publishers for an AdSense for Mobile beta test.
Google’s invitation reads:
“As part of our efforts to develop new and improved AdSense products for our partners, we will begin a limited beta test for AdSense for mobile. AdSense for mobile allows publishers to monetize their mobile websites through the placement of targeted text ads.”
Google already has an extensive FAQ page for publishers looking to create mobile ads for AdSense.
For those of you not familiar with Adsense, just look on the right hand side of our homepage and below Advertisements it says Ads by Google. Google AdSense matches ads to your site’s content, and you earn money whenever your visitors click on them. On our site, it looks like right now there are a bunch of ringtone ads. Google Adsense makes it very easy for any website to generate advertising revenue and Adsense for mobile will do the same for your mobile site.
This is certainly worth keeping an eye on, because there has been a lot of noise in this space from mobile-pureplay ad networks. The biggest one of those, Admob, claims over 4Billion mobile ads served on their network.
The fact that Google is getting into the game means that the mobile web may actually be taking off. There have been some recent reports about mobile web usage and truthfully, I’m always a little suspicious of the growth estimates. It’s definitely coming though, and having Google push this will only help adoption.
